Film competitions
Many directors start their careers by entering competitions. Here are a few that we’ve found that you can have a go at.
You can also find books on digital video editing at your library.
48 Hour Film Competition
- New Zealand competition in which teams compete to write, shoot and edit a short film in 48 hours.
Blue Light SADD Short Film Competition
- Blue Light, SADD (Students Against Drunk Driving) and the chance to winprizes in the short-film competition being run throughout all secondary schools in New Zealand.
Cut! Short Video Competition
- Students create a short video (between four and eight minutes in length) to enter into this competition. The categories are documentary and drama, and the competition is open to all NCEA level 2 and 3 students. Great prizes including a Wintec scholarship.

Filmaka
- Monthly competitions provide exciting challenges where you can win prizes, showcase your work, develop your skills and find an audience.
Freemasons Reel Science Film Festival
- The Freemasons Reel Science Film Festival is a competition for New Zealand students in Yr 11 to Yr 13 to make a two-minute film on anything to do with science. Contains a page of filmmaking tips
Gifted Awareness Week competitions
- A competition to celebrate gifted kids, their families and professional educators. Written, photgraphic and film competitions.
MovieFest
- Student showcase of movie-making talent. This competition aims to stimulate the use of digital video editing tools and foster the use of computers for digital video editing, and to reward creativity, technical achievement, and innovation.
New Zealand Mountain Film Festival
- The festival gives filmmakers a chance to showcase their work, receive merit and win cash prizes. Submit your film for pre-screening consideration. All films selected as finalists will be screened at the festival in July 2010.
Seoul International Youth Film Festival
- Korean short film festival for youth competitors.
The Outlook for Someday
- The sustainability film challenge for young New Zealanders.
