Swimming
Swimming is a sport that's popular with young people, and Christchurch has plenty of talented young athletes who choose to spend their time in the pool. Christchurch was the home of the country's very first swimming club - way back in 1880 - and the sport continues its strong traditions to this day with swimmers like Sophie Pascoe flying the flag for their province.
Three Cantabrians will represent their country this summer at different events around the Pacific:
- Amaka Gessler, 18, will visit Guam for the Pan Pacific Championships in 2009.
- Sophia Batchelor, 13, will travel to Canberra for the Pacific School Games, and
- Alexandra Laidlaw, 16, will compete at the Australian Youth Olympic Festival.
The three are all members of the AquaGym club, here in Christchurch.
