Affirm 2010

Affirm posterMusician Vince Harder headlined the Aranui Family Festival at Wainoni Park on Saturday 4 December 2010.

Meet library staff

Christchurch City Libraries are proud to be part of this fantastic community festival.

Support for White Ribbon campaign

Inspirational White Ribbon support will start the event.

The Aranui Community Trust, which organises AFFIRM, is a big supporter of the "It’s not OK" family violence campaign and will mark the start of 9AFFIRM with prayers and the lighting of a candle by MP Lianne Dalziel to express the community’s support of the White Ribbon campaign.

Get along to 9Affirm

9AFFIRM is a community get-together of music, dance and fun. A’preeshiate, D’sendantz and Dynasty Dancers will play. Stalls, food, races, games and have-a-go activities are all on the cards.

“White Ribbon is very important here in Aranui and we think that endorsing this message at our event is vital. We light the candle at AFFIRM to remind us that family violence is not ok,” Rachael Fonotia of the Aranui Community Trust Incorporated Society says.

“The lit candle is a challenge to people to rethink attitude as far as family violence is concerned and it symbolises the lifting of ignorance or apathy on the subject.”

Take a fitness challenge

Police are also working with the Trust by offering a speed, endurance and strength obstacle course similar to what they offer their recruits to challenge to residents to become more active and take up a healthier lifestyle. Participants will be monitored and advised on their strengths and weakness after taking part in running, vertical jumps, continuous press-ups and grip strength tests.

Special focus on youth

AFFIRM, which has been celebrating diversity and affirming community values for the past eight years, also recognises youth efforts with a series of annual awards in Sports, Academics and Creative Arts in the 11-25 age range. A prestigious award is also offered to a member of the community. The awards, presented midway through the six-hour programme, are finalised by a panel of judges.
