In 2008 five Aranui Theatre Company students launched a nationwide tour. They travelled 24,500 kilometres and performed to over 22,000 people.
Formed in February by director Robert Gilbert and graduates of the Aranui Theatre Academy, the group won over audiences around the country with their fresh, innovative approach to the works of Shakespeare.
We profile the five actors and showcase photos from a remarkable year on the road.
Robert Gilbert (pictured far left) set the whole tour up, and said the troupe should be proud of themselves.
“They are not only fine actors, they are fine people. It has been an extraordinary adventure for them and one that they will never forget. I am enormously proud of their achievements.”
In addition to performing in schools and community venues the length of the country, the Aranui Theatre Company performed at three theatre festivals. They won awards for individual members and the troupe, including the British Drama League Trophy for the Best Comedy at the District Theatre Federation Festival. The judge at the Regional Theatre Festival said it would be hard to find a more creative and imaginative production.
The tour was sponsored by EXiTO Industry Training and RockGas North Canterbury.
