Save Mart, 472 Cranford Street

The entryTel: 354 6296

Opening Hours:

Situated quite a way up from Bealey Ave, past Innes Road and it's on the right-hand side. You can't miss the sign posts. There are plenty of parking spaces just outside the store.

There are 3 other Savemarts in Christchurch:

45 Battersea Street, Sydenham
52 New Brighton Road, New Brighton
94 Shands Road, Hornby

This place is huge, light and airy. It's also clean, orderly and well spread out. Everything is itemised and colour co-ordinated on racks along wide aisles. Sizes are shown clearly on the price labels which are easily attached to the top of the garment so you don't have to fish around for ages trying to find out whether it's going to fit you or not (word of warning here — be prepared to strike a lot of clothing in small sizes … it seems size there aren't that many of us out there shaped size 10 and under - phew …)

They have everything here. Women's wear - from jeans to party to modern to skirts to T-shirts to dresses to jumpers. Blokes' gear — tops, trousers, boots, jerseys. Kids gear and a selection for larger sizes. The Retro Section (beneath the Vinyl) is extensive and attractively displayed. They also have accessories of all kinds — scarves, belts, bags, shoes, boots, etc.

The Retro sectionPrices are amazingly cheap - normal items started at as little as $3 for a T-shirt, averaging $8 for skirts and around $10 for jerseys and dresses. They even had decent Levis on the rack for $10 and a small range of label gear at the more expensive end of the market - anything from $35 - $50. Keep an eye out for their sales too - the pink tab one was on while I was there which meant everything with this label on was half price. Changing rooms are clean and private and the curtains actually meet across the rails!!! Plus there are plenty of mirrors so you can have a good look at yourself.

Verdict: Great value for money & really good fun
