You may be able to change your clothes or your shoes every day but when it comes to the stuff growing out of your head it’s a bit more tricky. If you make a mistake with your haircut it’s a lot harder to change than your socks, so it pays to get it right.
Choosing a haircut can be tricky as there are so many different styles available but a good rule of thumb is to choose a style that flatters your face shape. Other things to consider are your lifestyle – are you into sports or other activities that might make having hair in your face a hassle? Are you the sort of person who likes to spend a lot of time hogging the mirror, or would a low-maintenance, easy style suit you better?
The texture of your hair can also come into play. If your hair is very fine and thin then a long straight style might leave your locks looking sad and limp. If, however, you have a thick mop of hair then layering can help reduce some of that boofy volume…unless boofy volume is what you’re going for. There are lots of things to take into account.
If you’re thinking about colouring your hair then trying out a shade temporarily is a good option. Light or mid-brown coloured hair will take a semi-permanent or temporary colour pretty well. This means that you’ll be able to play around a bit and try something out without committing to having that shade for a long time. Semi-permanents usually last for around six weeks and since they contain conditioning ingredients, can really improve the shine of your hair. Temporary dyes usually wash out straight away. Either sort are reasonably cheap so a good option if your allowance doesn’t stretch far.
If you find a colour that you like you can always think about getting a permanent dye job later on. Temporary hair dyes come in a range of colours including natural shades but also crazy colours like pink, blue or fire engine red so you’ve got plenty of choice. Another benefit of non-permanent dyes is that they wash out over time which means no nasty looking re-growth (ack!).
How you style your hair can also say something about what you’re into. Hip hop or death metal? High School Musical or punk? The look you choose may tell people a lot about who you are. Who are the musicians or celebrities that you relate to? Maybe you could pinch their look (but make it your own)?
