Meet Grace Atkinson - Cleo/Nova Model Winner 2004
She's gorgeous. And, what's more, she's just as lovely to talk to as
to look at. Which, in the modelling business, is what it's all about…
- Congratulations - we understand the results were announced on your
16th birthday?
- Thank you! It was kind of unbelievable really and a pretty amazing
birthday present
- Have you been involved in modelling before?
- Only very low key. I've modelled for some salons and clothes shops
around Timaru but that's been about it. I was going to try and do some
more though to earn extra cash while at Uni.
- What were you going to take?
- I'd planned to go to Wellington and do Fashion Design but now I'm
not too sure. There's so much happening and I figure it's just best to
wait and see what I get offered before making any long term plans. There's
even a possibility I might have to move up to Auckland if I want to
carry on modelling.
- How're your folks handling all this?
- They're being great. Totally supportive - even if it was all a bit
of shock!
- When did you decide to enter the competition?
- My friends and I were listening to The Edge when it was advertised
and they said I should go in for it but … no way! But then we were
up in Christchurch shopping and Caroline (director and owner of Nova
Models) saw me and talked me into entering.
- What did the actual competition involve?
- There were 8 finalists with 3 from the South Island. We flew up to
Auckland to join the others. The first day we were at Nova's headquarters
where we got to meet each other and had dress rehearsals. The second
day we were practising, getting ready for the final show when we'd be
judged on our performances. It's not just about the way you look though
because personality is just as important. We were interviewed by 8 -
10 judges altogether - but it wasn't too daunting!
- Any scary moments or bloopers?
- No. Not really. We were all a bit relieved that things were kind of
normal because everyone's heard how the modelling industry can be a bit
bitchy but it wasn't like that at all. I didn't have any real muck ups
- oh, apart from in one of the rehearsals when you don't bother with
double-sided tape - well, when you're up on that catwalk in a bikini
you have to shake your ass a bit, you know, and my breasts kind of ended
up looking like they were in a G-string!
- Any advice you can share?
- Be professional at all times. The judges told us that. And don't be
too crazy and over the top.
- Any personal advice from you?
- I've never been asked that question before! I guess … just to
enter competitions, try different agencies, oh, and don't
take things personally.
People are talking about your body all the time and in the end it
comes down to personal preference but it's not personally aimed at you.
